Dr. Guy Fried joined the Magee staff in 1989. He earned a BA in psychology with additional studies in chemistry, biology and
economics from Hofstra University in New York in 1981. After graduation he attended Yale Medical School where upon completion
of his thesis he received his MD degree in 1985.
Dr. Fried is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation with further board certifications in Pain Medicine, Spinal
Cord Injury Medicine, and Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
He is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He has twice received the
Jefferson Rehab Residency Attending of the Year award for teaching. In 2002 he was voted as one of the Philadelphia's Top
Docs.
Todd Bernstein, MD

Todd Bernstein, M.D. is the Brain Injury Medical Director and is responsible for directing and enhancing Magee’s inpatient
and outpatient brain injury programs. Magee's comprehensive brain injury rehabilitation care system includes Acute Rehabilitation,
Community Reintegration, Day Hospital, Mild Brain Injury Program, Independent Medical (Physiatric) Evaluations (IMEs), Neuropsychological
Evaluations, and Lifetime Follow-Up.
Dr. Bernstein has more than 20 years of experience in physical medicine and rehabilitation. He comes to Magee from the National
Rehabilitation Hospital and Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he was the Medical Director of the International
Program and a Physiatrist in the Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury Program since 1996.
Previously, he spent two years as an Associate Medical Director for Head Trauma Services at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, M.D.
He also was an Instructor of residents who were assigned at Sinai and Johns Hopkins University.
He began his professional career at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation Chief Resident from 1985 to ’88. He went on to work at several institutions in the state of Maine focusing
on physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Dr. Bernstein is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. He is a graduate of Temple University’s School of
Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Barbara J. Browne, MD

Barbara J. Browne, MD, earned her BA in Biology at Oberlin College in Ohio in 1982, and then received her MD from the Medical
College of Pennsylvania in1986. Her residencies included training in both Internal Medicine and Physical Medicine Rehabilitation.
Now she is Magee's only staff member to be board certified in both Internal Medicine and Physical Medicine.
Dr. Browne is a member of several professional and academic societies including the American Academy of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, and the American Association of
Electrodiagnostic Medicine. She has published abstracts in medical journals such as Paraplegia and The Archives of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation. She has conducted numerous clinical lectures on stroke rehabilitation to both consumer and professional
audiences.
Dr. Browne is an expert in the areas of stroke, geriatrics and spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
Jeanne G. Doherty, MD

Jeanne G. Doherty, MD, joined the medical staff in January 2000. She received her BS in Biology at Saint Joseph’s University
and earned her MD at Georgetown University. She completed her internal medicine internship at Pennsylvania Hospital and completed
her residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
She is an active member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,
the National Stroke Association and Philadelphia International Medicine. She also enjoys her work as a volunteer member of
the Guillain Barre Foundation and Action Aids. She has published in "The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine," and is actively
involved in research activities.
She acts as a consultant in general rehabilitation at skilled nursing facilities in Philadelphia and New Jersey. She enjoys
teaching medical students and residents through lecturing and as Clinical Instructor for the Department of Rehabilitation
Medicine at Thomas Jefferson Medical College.
She has a special interest in neuromuscular disorders, musculoskeletal injuries, brain injury and geriatric rehabilitation.

Christopher S. Formal, MD

Christopher S. Formal, MD, has been a member of Magee's medical staff since 1982, most recently as the assistant medical director
for educational programs. Dr. Formal earned his BS at Haverford College in 1975 and at then received his MD from the University
of Maryland School of Medicine in 1979.
An expert in spinal cord injury, Dr. Formal has lectured extensively on this topic. He has also published numerous papers
and abstracts. He teaches future physicians as Clinical Professor for the department of rehabilitation medicine at Jefferson
Medical College.
Dr. Formal is a member of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Academy of
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Association of Academic Physiatrists.
"Rehabilitation is a team effort," says Dr. Formal. "The most important member of the team changes constantly, and is often
the patient. My area of expertise is spinal cord injury. I also enjoy working with patients and other team members at Magee
Rehabilitation Hospital."
Mendel Kupfer, M DAttending Physiatrist

Dr. Mendel Kupfer joined the physician staff of Magee Rehabilitation in August of 2006. Dr. Kupfer is a board certified Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist and Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Jefferson Medical College of
Thomas Jefferson University. He completed residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he served as Academic
Chief Resident. Dr. Kupfer attended medical school at Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine and holds a Bachelors
of Science degree in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Kupfer's clinical focus is in spinal cord injury, sports medicine and pain management. He has published in peer reviewed
journals and actively participates in resident physiacian education. Dr. Kupfer is a member of multiple professional organizations
and is program director of the PA Academy of PM&R annual conference of 2008.
Helena Lax, MD

Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Lax, of Blue Bell, Pa., has more than 15 years of
medical experience. She is highly skilled in physical medicine and rehabilitation, having most recently served as an attending
physician at Chestnut Hill Rehabilitation Hospital. Her extensive experience also includes work in internal medicine
A graduate of Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Dr. Lax is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation, and the American Academy of Pain Management.
In addition to her experience in the Philadelphia area, Dr. Lax has worked in New York, Canada and Czechoslovakia.
Patrick Rommel, DO

Patrick Rommel, D.O., joined the medical staff in August 2001. He received his BS in exercise science at the University of
Southern California and earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New
Jersey-School of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Thomas Jefferson
University Hospital and is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Dr. Rommel is an active member of the American Osteopathic Association, American Medical Association, and the American Academy
of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has special interests in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as
stroke, Parkinson’s, brain injuries, geriatric rehabilitation, and performs electromyographic studies as well. He also treats
muscle, spasticity disorder, myofascial pain syndromes and performs joint injections, Botox injections, as well as osteopathic
manipulation. He is also fluent in Spanish which is another asset in dealing with the multi-cultural population of Philadelphia.
Dr. Rommel is also a Clinical Instructor with the Jefferson Medical College and is an enthusiastic teacher of medical students
and residents with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Rommel treats outpatients at Magee facilities in Philadelphia
as well as acting as a consultant for rehabilitative services at Methodist Hospital sub-acute rehab unit and assisted living
facility in Center City. Electromyography studies are performed at both Magee and Methodist Hospital.
He manages and treats his patients with a biopsychosocial approach to patient care and actively involves the patient in directing
his or her care. “One of the most satisfying reasons I went into rehabilitation is that patients are empowered to take control
over their care rather than being told what to do, and much more significant functional outcomes are seen.”
Liane Sher, MD

Liane Sher, MD, attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1978 with a BS in Zoology, and was Phi Beta Kappa. Following
graduation she went to West Virginia University School of Medicine where she earned her MD in 1982. She is certified by the
American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with a subspecialty
board in spinal cord medicine.
She is active with the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,
the Pennsylvania Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and other professional groups including the American Medical
Association, American College of Rehabilitation Medicine, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Philadelphia County Medical Society
and the American Academy of Pain Medicine.
Dr. Sher has special interests in electromyography (EMG), geriatric, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Dr.
Sher enjoys "helping people to reach their highest possible functional levels."

Dr. Parvati Thiru joined the staff of Magee Rehabilitation in November of 2006. Dr. Thiru comes to Magee from Einstein where
she was an attending physician. Dr. Thiru attended Medical School at Annamalai University Hospital in India where she received
top honors. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine (Hahnemann University
& Medical College of Pennsylvania).
