2007 Night of Champions

Nearly 400 guests gathered for an incredible event on May 11, 2007, to help support Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Community Program Fund. Magee’s Seventh Annual Night of Champions featured exciting raffles and auctions, entertainment by comedian Joe Conklin, and a who’s who list of local sports celebrities. When all was said and done, more than $182,000—an event record—was raised. Proceeds help benefit programs such as Magee’s Think First program, wheelchair sports, computer training, Patient Learning Resource Center, peer mentor programs, and injury support groups.

Dr. Bob Carr, Vice President and Medical Director of Employee Health Management at GlaxoSmithKline, received the 2007 Magee Champion in the Community Award. The award is presented annually to a community leader who supports and advocates for individuals with disabilities. Dr. Carr, who is a former member of the Hospital’s Board of Trustees and a past chairman of the President’s Council, is a generous supporter of Magee’s patients and programs as well as Magee’s Night of Champions and Humanitarian Award Dinner.

Magee’s wheelchair athletes had a chance to meet and greet Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid and legendary R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass, who both stayed to take photos and sign autographs. Among other VIPs in attendance were NBA Hall-of-Famer Billy Cunningham, 76ers G.M. Billy King, Phillies 1980 World Series manager Dallas Green, Temple University’s men’s basketball head coach Fran Dunphy, former Philadelphia Flyers Bernie Parent and Brian Propp, former Eagles Mike Mamula and Mike Chalenski, former Penn State football player Adam Taliaferro, Phillies director of media and public affairs Scott Palmer (who served as emcee), and CBS-3 Sports Anchor Beasley Reece, who served as auctioneer.

IBEW Local 98 and GlaxoSmithKline were this year’s title sponsors.
