Neuropsychological Assessment Services
Neuropsychological assessment is available through Magee's outpatient services. A neuropsychological assessment is often requested when an individual has suffered an injury or illness that may affect cognitive functioning. Recommendations are made to assist families, professionals and patients to understand strengths and limitations.
Magee's neuropsychologists are skilled and experienced in providing assessment and treatment recommendations to survivors of stroke, brain injury, and other neurological injuries and illnesses. The areas typically evaluated include: attention, concentration, memory, learning, motor skills, perceptual skills, intelligence, planning, problem solving, emotional status and personality factors. As appropriate, academic functioning may also be assessed. Individual assessments are tailored to answer specific referral questions.
Reports following evaluation include a review of areas of cognitive strength and weakness, an evaluation of the impact emotional function or personality factors may have on cognitive functioning, and recommended strategies for improvement and compensation.
Neuropsychological assessment usually involves an initial interview, followed by several hours of face to face testing. The testing is comprised of a number of mental tasks, and is completed while sitting at a table with a test facilitator. Testing may take up to six or eight hours, and the testing sessions can be broken into appointments that fit the patient's schedule and endurance. When the testing is completed, a feedback session is offered for review of findings and recommendations.
