Billy Cunningham to receive Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Champion in the Community Award
Award to be presented at Night of Champions to benefit
PHILADELPHIA – Basketball Hall of Famer and legendary Philadelphia 76er player and coach Billy Cunningham will receive Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Champion in the Community Award at the hospital’s 5th Annual Night of Champions on Friday, May 13. All funds raised at the event benefit Magee’s wheelchair sports program. The award is presented annually to a community leader who supports individuals with disabilities. Cunningham is a member of Magee’s Board of Trustees and an honorary coach for the hospital’s wheelchair basketball team – the Magee Sixers Spokesmen. He also advocates for the rights of people with disabilities. “Magee is a special place dedicated to helping people with disabilities reach their maximum level of independence,” says Cunningham. “It’s a pleasure to be actively involved with the hospital and truly an honor to receive this award.” The Night of Champions will take place at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall at 1301 S. Columbus Blvd. in South Philadelphia beginning at 7 p.m. Also, an hour before the event, Chaddsford Winery will host a VIP wine tasting reception. A number of local Philadelphia sports figures are scheduled to attend including, Philadelphia Eagles coaches Brad Childress and John Harbaugh, WPVI TV-6 sportscaster Scott Palmer and WIP radio personality and NBC 10 sports reporter Howard Eskin. rugby, tennis and softball. Magee has teamed with professional sports franchises to form the Magee Sixers Spokesmen wheelchair
basketball team, the Magee Eagles wheelchair rugby team, the Magee Phillies wheelchair softball team and the Magee Freedoms
wheelchair tennis team. In addition, Magee is launching a power wheelchair soccer team. Teams are open to anyone in the community
