Two Magee Doctors Named Among Top Rehabilitation Physicians in the Region

Two Magee Rehabilitation Hospital doctors are named among the top physicians in their field in the May 2006 issue of Philadelphia Magazine. William E. Staas Jr., M.D., FACP, and Guy W. Fried, M.D., are listed in the category of physical medicine and rehabilitation.  Dr. Staas has been President and Medical Director at Magee since 1977 and is retiring from the Hospital August 1. Dr. Fried is Magee’s Medical Director of Outpatients and Brain Injury at the Hospital and will succeed Dr. Staas as Medical Director at Magee.

Every year, a company called Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., surveys the region’s physicians to find those they consider to be the best in their fields. Castle Connolly sends out tens of thousands of invitation letters to physicians in private practice—randomly selected—as well as to the medical leadership of major medical centers, specialty hospitals, teaching hospitals and regional medical centers. Invited physicians can go online to a special restricted access website and nominate outstanding physicians in various specialties and subspecialties “to whom you would send members of your family.” The process asks not only for doctors who excel in academic medicine and research, but also for those with outstanding interpersonal skills.  The results are published in Philadelphia Magazine's annual Top Doctors issue, usually in May.

Board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation since 1970, Dr. Staas has helped Magee gain national recognition as one of the foremost hospitals for physical medicine and the rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. Magee was ranked among the nation’s top rehabilitation hospitals by U.S. News & World Report in 2004 and 2005.

Dr. Staas is a member of many professional and academic societies, including the American Medical Association and the American Spinal Injury Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He is a past president of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.

A Magee physiatrist since 1989, Dr. Fried specializes in rehabilitation for spinal cord injury patients with ventilator assisted breathing. He is one of a handful of physicians in the nation focusing on this type of care.

Dr. Fried is an attending physician in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Methodist Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor. He is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation with further board certifications in pain medicine, spinal cord injury medicine, and electrodiagnostic medicine. He maintains an interest in the legal aspects of medicine and is an expert reviewer on the board to review litigation cases for the Pennsylvania Medical Society Liability Insurance Company.

Dr. Fried received his M.D. from Yale Medical School. He interned and later was a resident at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.  In 1988, he was named Chief Resident in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Jefferson.  The following year he joined the medical staff at Magee.

In June 2006, Magee Rehabilitation Hospital will hold the Dr. Guy Fried Symposium, sponsored by the Tuttleman Family Foundation.  The educational seminar will focus on activity based interventions, which will feature therapeutic modalities that enhance patient recovery. Stanley and Edna Tuttleman, prominent entrepreneurs and philanthropists in the Philadelphia area, wanted to fund the symposium as a tribute to Dr. Fried, who took great care of Edna when she was a patient at Magee.
