The Segal Classic has raised more than $6.2 million in 17 years

PHILADELPHIA – Jerry Segal and The Friends of Jerry Segal set out to raise nearly $1 million for patients of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital during the 17th Annual Jerry Segal Classic, which was held on September 29, 2006. Through the commitment of generous sponsors and supporters, the Segal Classic exceeded expectations and raised $1 million, bringing the 17-year total to more than $6.2 million

The Philadelphia region’s largest single-day charity golf event included nearly 400 golfers at The ACE Club and Green Valley Country Club, both located in Lafayette Hill, Pa. More than 500 guests attended the dinner program at Green Valley Country Club, where raffles and live and silent auctions took place. The funds raised from the Segal Classic help create and enhance programs and services for individuals with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputation, and other impairments at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital.

“It was truly wonderful how the participants, realizing how the patients benefit, stepped up to the plate,” says Jerry Segal. “It is very rewarding to know that people care and want to make a positive difference in the lives of the patients at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital.”

Some of the sports and media celebrities who participated were NBA Hall-of-Famer Billy Cunningham, Philadelphia Flyers’ legendary goalie Bernie Parent, WIP 610AM Sports Talk radio host Howard Eskin, Philadelphia Phillies’ Director of Media and Public Affairs Scott Palmer, KYW TV-3 sports director Beasley Reese, 76ers play-by-play announcer Mark Zumoff, former 76ers head coach Fred Carter and player Aaron McKie, former Philadelphia Eagles’ Mike Mamula, and more.

Jerry Segal formed the Friends of Jerry Segal and founded the Jerry Segal Classic to help pay back Magee Rehabilitation Hospital for helping him relearn how to walk following unsuccessful neck surgery that left him with quadriplegia. After completing inpatient rehabilitation at Magee, Segal was able to return to his Center City law practice and playing golf with friends.
