Former Magee Patient Who Walks Again to be Honored at Jerry Segal Classic Dinner
Even though a diving accident last summer left her with a broken neck, and put her ability to walk again in question, Heather Shultz never stopped smiling during her months of rehabilitation at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. And on Friday, September 28, at 7:00pm at the Green Valley Country Club at 201 Ridge Pike, the 22 year old Cinnaminson, NJ native will be smiling, and walking again, when she is recognized at the 18th Annual Jerry Segal Classic, a golf event/dinner that raises money and awareness for the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia. The Jerry Segal Classic, held this year at the ACE Golf Club and Green Valley Country Club, is the brainchild of prominent Philadelphia lawyer, Jerry Segal. Segal was a patient at Magee after a surgical error left him a quadriplegic in 1988. Through rehab and training at the hospital, Segal was able to walk again. He was so thankful to the hospital and staff that Segal, and his wife Carolyn, came up with the idea of a golf fundraiser. The first year, the Segal Classic raised over $50,000. Last year alone it raised over $1 million and the total raised to date is over $6 million. And every year, the Segal Classic picks a former Magee rehab patient who exemplifies the hospital’s mission of helping patients regain their independence, and of course, the “Never give up. Never give enough” attitude of Jerry Segal. With her infectious, constant smile, Shultz was a perfect choice. On hand to applaud Schultz for her amazing progress and spirit will be Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, NBA Hall-of –Famer Billy Cunningham, Flyers legend Bernie Parent, WIP 610-Am SportsTalk Radio Host Howard Eskin, KYW TV-3 Sports Director Beasley Reece, and former sports broadcaster Scott Palmer. |
