Local Golf Tournament Allows Magee Rehabilitation Hospital to be on Cutting Edge
When prominent Philadelphia Attorney, Jerry Segal, became quadriplegic after a surgical accident in California, he came to the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital where he made two vows. The first was to walk again. The second was to help future patients at Magee as much as he could. Nineteen years later, he’s still doing both. Through the Jerry Segal Classic golf event—which has raised over $6 million over its seventeen year history—Segal has been able to provide patients at Magee with everything from new, comfortable vans to free meals for their loved ones who come visit them. Now, he’s providing them with robots. ReoTherapy is new, state of the art, robotic technology that is used for improving upper extremity function in patients that have experienced ceverbrovascular accidents and other neurological conditions. The patient's arm is attached to a robot that helps provide manually intensive repetitive shoulder and elbow movements to increase motor function– as well as cognitive and perceptual function. ReoTherapy is the only robot in the healthcare market and is only located at 10 facilities in the United States. Magee is one of those facilities. Training on the robot has been completed by the occupational therapists and is being used on numerous inpatients. ReoTherapy is funded through the Jerry Segal Classic.“Since leaving Magee, I’ve been dedicated to raising money to help individuals with spinal cord injuries, strokes and other impairments reach their maximum level of independence,” said Segal, who is anticipating another successful outing on September 28 at the ACE Country Club and Green Valley Country Club. “They can do that at Magee.” |
