William E. Staas Jr., MD, Magee President and Medical Director, named top rehabilitation physician

PHILADELPHIA –William E. Staas Jr., MD, FACP, of Mt. Laurel, N.J., was named one of the Philadelphia region’s top rehabilitation physicians by a national, independent research and publishing company. The list, compiled by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., appears in the May 2005 issue of Philadelphia Magazine.

Castle Connolly compiled the list using a combination of online, mail and telephone surveys of medical leadership of area hospitals and a sample of local physicians. Castle Connolly’s physician-led team of researchers utilized a rigorous screening process, carefully reviewing doctors’ educational and professional experience before selecting the physicians most highly regarded by their peers.

Board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation since 1970, Dr. Staas has served as president and medical director at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital for the last 29 years. Under his leadership, Magee has gained national recognition as one of the foremost hospitals for physical medicine and the rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities.

Dr. Staas is a member of many professional and academic societies, including the American Medical Association and the American Spinal Injury Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He is a past president of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.

Dr. Staas has also attained Subspecialty Certification in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is one of four physicians at Magee to have earned the certification. The other doctors include Christopher S. Formal, MD, Liane Sher, MD, and Guy W. Fried, MD.
