Magee to Honor Walter D’Alessio At 16th Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner
Philadelphia (October 2003)—Walter D’Alessio, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Legg Mason Real Estate Services, will be honored with Magee Rehabilitation’s Humanitarian Award at the Hospital’s 16th Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner on Tuesday, November 18, at the Four Seasons Hotel. The tribute recognizes Mr. D’Alessio’s commitment to Magee’s vision that people with disabilities have access to all the benefits and opportunities available in the community. Mr. D’Alessio became chairman and CEO of Legg Mason Real Estate Services in 1982. He is responsible for the management and overall direction of the organization, which is one of the largest commercial mortgage banking operations in the nation, with 18 offices along the east coast. Previously, he was Executive Vice President of the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), and before then, Executive Director of the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Philadelphia , with responsibility for all programs and activities, including administration of more than 50 projects and approximately 500 employees. With the Redevelopment Authority and PIDC, Mr. D’Alessio worked in concert with many of the City’s mayors, and was involved in large scale development projects in Philadelphia . These included The Gallery, Franklin Town, Society Hill, Eastwick, Market Street East , Penn’s Landing, East Poplar, as well as the development and expansion of the University of Pennsylvania , and Temple and Drexel universities. Mr. D’Alessio has remained active with PIDC as Board member and Chairman, and has served on numerous corporate and not-for-profit boards and committees. Among others, these include PECO Energy Company, Brandywine Realty Trust, American Red Cross, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, World Affairs Council, Independence Blue Cross, Independence Seaport Museum , WHYY, the Greater Philadelphia First Partnership for Economic Development, and the Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Center . Mr. D’Alessio is a member and officer of several national professional associations, including the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, the National Council for Urban Economic Development and Counselors of Real Estate. He has also been an Adjunct Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania , and is presently an Adjunct at the University’s School of Fine Arts . Recognized locally and nationally for his various achievements, he has received the Edward deLuca Memorial Award from the National Council for Urban Economic Development, the Citizen of the Year Award from the American Red Cross, the Thomas E. Cahill Leadership Award from Roman Catholic High School, the Business Leader of the Year Award from the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, and the William Penn Award of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and Penjerdel. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Landscape Architecture from Pennsylvania State University , and a Master of Science Degree in City Planning from the University of Illinois . A native of the Pittsburgh area, Mr. D’Alessio resides in Philadelphia . |
