Jerry Segal Classic Raises $500,000 for Magee Rehabilitation Patients
Philadelphia (November 2002)—The annual Jerry Segal Golf Classic has now raised more than $3.1 million for the benefit of the patients at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. The 2002 Classic, held on October 4th, raised $500,000 as more than 280 golfers filled the courses at Green Valley and Meadowlands country clubs. Nearly 500 guests, including former patients who have benefited from Segal Classic funds, attended the dinner at Green Valley . Over the past 13 years, the Jerry Segal Classic has provided for scores of programs and services for Magee’s patients, including the one-of-a-kind Jerry and Carolyn Segal Center for Community Skills on Magee’s rooftop.This unique indoor-outdoor multi-terrain streetscape allows patients to practice skills for a wide range of challenges they will encounter when they reenter the community. Among many other services, Segal Classic funds have purchased four buses to transport patients, over 24,000 meals for patients’ visitors through the Friends and Family Meals Program, as well as equipment, including wheelchairs, computers and adaptive and therapeutic equipment for Magee and for patients in need. The Segal Classic has also provided funds for the development of a computer training center for individuals with disabilities, free TV service for all patients, and funding for the Edward G.Rendell Community Re-Entry Scholarship Program, which helps patients with brain and spinal cord injuries re-integrate into the community. The Governor-elect has been honorary chair of the Segal Classic since 1992. The 14th Annual Jerry Segal Classic will be held on September 19, 2003 .
