Jerry Segal Golf Classic takes aim at $3,000,000 for the Benefit of Magee Patients

Philadelphia (August 2002)—The annual Jerry Segal Classic, unrivaled as the Philadelphia region's most successful one-day golf charity event, will take place on Friday, October 4 at the Green Valley and Meadowlands country clubs. Golfers and sponsors are coming together again with the goal of surpassing the $3,000,000 mark in funds raised over the past 12 years. Last year's Classic raised $436,000, bringing the total of the fund-raiser for Magee's patients to well over $2.6 million—with every dollar going to patient programs and services that otherwise would not exist.

The one-of-a-kind Jerry and Carolyn Segal Center for Community Skills on Magee's rooftop is among scores of projects and services that have helped thousands of Magee's patients. This unique multi-terrain streetscape allows patients to practice skills for challenges they will encounter when they reenter the community. The Center has varying curb heights, cobblestones, sewer grate and manhole cover, and an occasional purposely flawed walkway. There's also a practice ATM, phone booth, gas pump, and a vehicle patients use to learn how to get in and out of.

Segal Classic funds have also provided: three wheelchair-accessible buses to transport patients; more than 20,000 meals to patients' visitors through the Friends and Family Meals Program; new televisions and free TV service for all patients, as well as wheelchairs, computers, and adaptive and therapeutic equipment for the Hospital and for patients in need. Also, the Edward G. Rendell Community Re-Entry Program, named in honor of the Honorary Chair of the Segal Classic since 1992, helps patients with brain and spinal cord injuries return to home, school or work.

All this would not be possible without the generous support of sponsoring businesses and individuals.  For information on how you can support the Jerry Segal Classic, call Magee Rehabilitation Hospital at 800-96-MAGEE.

You can also help Jerry Segal help Magee's patients through a donation to the United Way. The United Way listing is: The Friends of Jerry Segal. The donor choice number for Philadelphia & Delaware Valley is 12994. The donor choice number for New York is 042691
