William E. Staas, Jr., MD, FACP Marks 25th Anniversary as Magee’s President and Medical Director

Philadelphia (July 2002)—Dr. William E. Staas, Jr., has been the driving force behind the continued and growing success of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. Under his leadership as President and Medical Director since July 1977, Magee has achieved national acclaim as a premier rehabilitation hospital. In recent years, Magee has twice been named one of the nation’s top rehabilitation hospitals in a survey of physicians published in U.S. News & World Report.

Apart from his accomplishments as an administrator, Dr. Staas has also been recognized by his peers as one of the best doctors in America. He has been on the Philadelphia Magazine list of “Top Docs” on many occasions, most recently in 2002.

In addition to his roles as physician and administrator at Magee, Dr. Staas also directed the physiatry residency program at Jefferson Medical College and served a six-year term as a director of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is currently a director for the medical advisory board of Bayada Nursing, a regional home health agency.

Since 1978, Magee, with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, has been designated as the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of Delaware Valley. It is one of only 16 such federally-designated centers in the nation. Dr. Staas is the Center’s Co-Associate Director for Ongoing Care. He also holds professorships and directorships with the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Staas is a member of several professional and academic institutions, including the American Medical Association, the American Spinal Injury Association and the American College of Physicians. A gifted researcher, he has published dozens of scholarly articles on various subjects related to physical medicine and rehabilitation, and has given numerous presentations for professional organizations.

Dr. Staas earned his BS in Pharmacy at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science, and he received his MD from Jefferson Medical College in 1962. He was originally certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation in 1970.

Dr. Staas resides in Mt. Laurel, NJ with his wife, Carol.
