Magee Has Lead Role In Rec’ Day Showcase Of Sports And Recreation Opportunities

For People With Physical Disabilities

Philadelphia (June 2002)—People with physical disabilities from throughout the Philadelphia area are invited to attend Rec’ Day, a free event that demonstrates the many sports and recreation options available to the disabled community. Rec’ Day takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park.

Rec’ Day is geared primarily for people with mobility impairments and is sponsored by the Mayor’s Commission on People with Disabilities. Magee Rehabilitation Hospital will have a leadership role at the event. Magee’s wheelchair athletes will demonstrate a wide variety of wheelchair sports activities, including softball, basketball, rugby, tennis and martial arts. Magee will also demonstrate recreation options such as chess and drama.

The Pennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports, the United Cerebral Palsy Association and the Kardon Institute of the Arts are among other organizations participating in the event and will, respectively,  describe the fun of hand-cycling, bowling, and music, movement and dance activities. In addition, Moss Rehab will provide adapted van demonstrations.

Magee is the leading sponsor of wheelchair sports and recreation activities for people with disabilities in the Philadelphia region. Fun recreational activities add to the quality of life, and participating in wheelchair sports enables people with disabilities to increase personal confidence and improve overall health and fitness. Pre-registration for Rec’ Day is not required, and guests are encouraged to explore all the recreational opportunities available, discover or learn more about specific areas of interest, and participate in activities as they desire.

To get to Memorial Hall from the Schuylkill Expressway, exit at City Line Avenue, and turn left at Belmont Avenue. Follow Belmont to North Concourse Drive, and turn left. Memorial Hall is the large building about one block down on the left.

For more information about Rec’ Day, call Ms. Pat Thieringer, Magee’s Director of Community Programs, at (215) 587-3412.
