Former Magee Patient Helps Outfit Quadriplegic’s First Wheelchair
Philadelphia (December 2001)—Former Magee Rehabilitation patient Charles “Chic” Kelly, Jr., visited the Hospital recently to present a check for $1,500 to help Stanley Ramsey, a current Magee patient. In November 1988, Chic Kelly, Malvern Prep ice hockey star, severed his spinal cord during a practice session as a freshman at Merrimack College, Massachusetts. He was flown to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and three-and-one-half months later came to Magee for intensive rehabilitation. Being a quadriplegic did not deter Kelly from going forward with his life. In May 1993, he graduated from St. Joseph’s University with a B.A. in Economics and Philosophy. This spring, he will complete work on his MBA in Finance at Villanova University. Chic also teaches Theology at Malvern Prep and is an avid St Joe’s Hawks basketball fan. The Friends and Family of Chic Kelly raises money in an annual fund-raiser that features a silent auction. Hearing about Stanley Ramsey’s situation, Kelly decided to provide a big assist. Two years ago, Stanley Ramsey, now 21, went to a store on a shopping errand. He was robbed and shot through the neck, leaving him a quadriplegic who can move only his head. He recently had surgery for skin pressure sores and is recuperating at Magee. Moved from acute care hospitals to several nursing homes, Stanley has never had a power wheelchair. Fortunately, Magee received a donated power wheelchair that fits Stanley’s needs. It is a “sip-and-puff” wheelchair. By inhaling and breathing out, he can propel the wheelchair and gain new-found mobility. The $1,500 from Chic Kelly will pay for adjustments and modifications, as well as a battery and special seat cushion for Stanley Ramsey’s wheelchair. The check presentation, which took place in Magee’s Spinal Cord Injury Gym, reflects the true spirit of the season. A wonderful gift came early for Stanley Ramsey, thanks to Magee’s concern and Chic Kelly’s generosity.
