Magee to honor Jerry and Carolyn Segal at 14th Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner
Philadelphia (October 2001)—Jerry and Carolyn Segal will be honored with Magee Rehabilitation’s Humanitarian Award at the Hospital’s 14th Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner on Tuesday, November 13, at the Four Seasons Hotel. Jerry and Carolyn Segal are being honored for their unstinting philanthropy on behalf of Magee’s patients, and for their dedicated and leading advocacy for the disabled community. Jerry is the founding partner of the Philadelphia law firm-Segal, Wolf, Berk, Gaines & Liss. He was left a quadriplegic after unsuccessful neck surgery in 1988. Before he came to Magee for rehabilitation, the prognosis was that he would never walk again. But Jerry vowed to walk, and through his own determination and Magee’s help, at his discharge he walked on his own, resumed his law practice and an active and fulfilling lifestyle which includes playing golf with friends. To “pay back” Magee, in 1990 he founded the Jerry Segal Classic which has become the Philadelphia region’s most successful one-day golf charity event. Over the past 12 years, the Classic has raised well over $2 million for the benefit of Magee’s patients. Carolyn has been at Jerry’s side since the beginning of the Classic, serving as its Executive Director. Classic funds have provided for scores of programs and services for Magee’s patients, equipment for the Hospital and for patients in need, as well as renovations and special facilities, including the capstone project on Magee’s rooftop, the one-of-a-kind Jerry and Carolyn Segal Center for Community Skills. All proceeds raised at the dinner will support the Edward G. Rendell Community Re-Entry Scholarship Program. The program is
named in honor of Philadelphia’s former Mayor who has been the Honorary Chair of the Segal Classic since 1992, and who is
Co-Chair of the Humanitarian Award Dinner honoring Jerry and Carolyn Segal. This program provides services for individuals
who incur brain or spinal cord injuries, and helps people with disabilities return to work, school, home and the community. |
