Philadelphia (August 2001)—The Twelfth Annual Jerry Segal Classic for the benefit of patients at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital will take place on Friday, October 5 at the Green Valley and Meadowlands country clubs. The Segal Classic is unchallenged as the most successful one-day golf charity event in the Philadelphia region. In 2000, the Classic raised $400,000, and over the years it has raised well over $2 million, with all funds going to help Magee patients.

Funds from the Segal Classic have helped thousands of Magee's patients through scores of projects and services, including the one-of-a-kind Jerry and Carolyn Segal Center for Community Skills on Magee's rooftop. This unique indoor-outdoor multi-terrain streetscape allows patients to practice skills for challenges they will encounter when they reenter the community. The Center features a practice ATM, phone booth and gas pump, and a vehicle that patients use to learn how to get in and out of.

In addition, Segal Classic funds have provided: three wheelchair-accessible buses to transport patients; over 20,000 meals for patients' visitors through the Friends and Family Meals Program; new televisions and free TV service for all patients; and wheelchairs, computers, and adaptive and therapeutic equipment for the Hospital and for patients in need. Also, the Edward G. Rendell Community Re-Entry Scholarship Program, named in honor of the Honorary Chair of the Segal Classic since 1992, helps patients with brain and spinal cord injuries return to home, school or work.
