Wheelchair users "hitting off the tee" to mark start of Jerry Segal Classic Week
Philadelphia (August 2000)--Patients of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, several in wheelchairs, will join Jerry Segal and The Friends of Jerry Segal to "hit off the tee" on Friday, September 15 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Extreme Philadelphia, 1499 South Columbus Boulevard. "Hitting off the tee" marks the opening of Jerry Segal Classic Week. The 11th Annual Segal Classic for the benefit of Magee Rehabilitation will take place a week later, on Friday, September 22. Golfers and sponsors will again come together, this year at Green Valley and Meadowlands country clubs, with their sights set on far surpassing the $2 million mark in total funds raised since the beginning of the Classic. The Segal Classic is the region's most successful one-day golf charity event. Last year the Classic raised $412,500, bringing the ten-year total to over $1.75 million. All funds raised go to help Magee's patients. Over the years, Classic funds have provided for everything from the construction of the media-acclaimed, one-of-a-kind Jerry and Carolyn Segal Center for Community Skills on Magee's rooftop, to adaptive and therapeutic equipment for the Hospital and for patients in need. The Segal Classic has also funded the purchase of three wheelchair-accessible buses to transport patients, 15,000 meals from
the Friends and Family Meals Program for patients' visitors, and the Edward G. Rendell Community Re-Entry Scholarship Program
that helps patients with brain and spinal cord injuries reenter the community. (Former Mayor Rendell has been the Classic's
Honorary Chair since 1992.) |
