Jerry Segal Classic for Magee Rehabilitation to Tee Off for $2,000,000+
Philadelphia (August 2000)—Jerry Segal and The Friends of Jerry Segal will tee off on Friday, September 22, 2000 in the 11th Annual Segal Classic for the benefit of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. Golfers and sponsors will again come together, this year at Green Valley and Meadowlands country clubs, with their sights set on far surpassing the $2 million mark in total funds raised since the beginning of the Classic. The Segal Classic goes unchallenged as the region’s most successful one-day golf charity event. Last year the Classic raised $412,500, bringing the ten-year total to over $1.75 million. All funds raised go to help Magee’s patients. Over the years, Classic funds have provided for everything from the construction of the media-acclaimed, one-of-a-kind Jerry and Carolyn Segal Center for Community Skills on Magee’s rooftop, to adaptive and therapeutic equipment for the Hospital and for patients in need. The Segal Classic has also funded the purchase of three wheelchair-accessible buses to transport patients, 15,000 meals from the Friends and Family Meals Program for patients’ visitors, and the Edward G. Rendell Community Re-Entry Scholarship Program that helps patients with brain and spinal cord injuries reenter the community mainstream. (Former Mayor Rendell has been the Classic’s Honorary Chair since 1992.) Classic funds have also provided for the development of a computer training center for people with disabilities, new televisions and free TV service for all patients, renovations to patients’ rooms and the spinal cord injury floor, a community center for stroke patients, and much more.
