Magee volunteer bears torch for Tenth Anniversary Celebration of ADA

Philadelphia (August 2000)--Magee Rehabilitation Hospital volunteer Barbara Hughes was the torchbearer on July 29 for the Philadelphia leg of the Spirit of ADA Torch Relay commemorating the tenth anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Ms. Hughes, a resident of Northeast Philadelphia, is a former Magee patient who has since donated well over 1,000 hours of volunteer service to Magee. She had the torch affixed to her wheelchair as she traveled a 200-meter path inside Penn Treaty Park where the celebration took place.

In addition to the arrival of the National ADA Torch, the celebration featured "Rolling Justice," a statewide, grassroots rally for equal access to transportation, and remarks on the rights of people with disabilities by Ginny Thornburgh, wife of former Pennsylvania Governor and U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh.
