Magee Physician Earns Certification in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Main Campus
The American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has granted Subspecialty Certification in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine to Guy W. Fried, MD. Dr. Fried, a physician at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, earned the certification by meeting prerequisites in medical practice and education, and by successfully completing a proctored seven-hour written examination in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine (SCI Medicine). SCI Medicine addresses the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of traumatic spinal cord injury, as well as spinal cord dysfunction not caused by injury. Questions on the Certification Exam address, but are not limited to: spinal cord trauma and disease; medical complications of spinal cord injury such as chronic pain, spasticity, pulmonary impairment, and gastrointestinal complications; orthotic and assistive devices, and the rehabilitation of persons of all ages with spinal cord injury. Subspecialty certification in SCI Medicine is designed to enhance the quality of care of patients with spinal cord injury or dysfunction. Physicians certified in SCI Medicine demonstrate special expertise in clinical knowledge and skill that improve the rehabilitation and care of individuals with spinal cord injury, and in diagnostic and management services for complex and severe problems related to spinal cord injury. At Magee Rehabilitation, Guy W. Fried, MD, is Medical Director of the Incontinence and Respiratory Care programs for SCI patients, and is Physician Advisor for Utilization Review. Specializing in the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury patients with ventilator-assisted breathing, Dr. Fried is one of only a handful of physicians in the country focusing on this type of care. Magee's ventilator program supports its status as one of only 18 model centers for SCI rehabilitation in the United States. Dr. Fried earned a BA in Psychology from Hofstra University in New York in 1981, and an MD from Yale Medical School 1985.
He is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and in Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He belongs to numerous professional
societies and organizations including the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the American Congress of
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, and the American Medical Association. |
