William E. Staas, Jr., MD, Magee President and Medical Director,

Rated one of the region's top rehabilitation physicians

Philadelphia (May 1999)-- Already selected by his peers as one of the Best Doctors in America, physicians surveyed in Philadelphia and the surrounding seven-county area in Pennsylvania and New Jersey have named William E. Staas, Jr., MD, FACP, one of the region's top rehabilitation doctors.

The survey results are in the Top Doctors listing in the May 1999 issue of Philadelphia magazine. The publication began by working from a supplied list of doctors in the region who had been asked which doctors they would "consider most desirable for the care of a loved one." Follow-up calls to over 100 physicians resulted in the final list of top practitioners.

Dr. Staas has been Board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation since 1970, and has been President and Medical Director of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital since 1977. Under his leadership, Magee has gained national renown as one of the foremost hospitals for physical medicine and the rehabilitation of people with disabilities.

Magee, with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, was federally designated in 1978 as the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley. Dr. Staas is the Center's Co-Associate Director for Ongoing Care. Last year, Magee was named one of America's best rehabilitation hospitals in U.S. News & Annual Report's annual physicians' survey.

Dr. Staas is a member of many professional and academic societies, including the American Medical Association and the American Spinal Injury Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He is a Past President of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.

A gifted researcher and prominent lecturer, Dr. Staas also holds professorships and directorships with the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and Methodist Hospital.

Magee is the Philadelphia region's original provider of physical and cognitive rehabilitation. The not-for-profit health organization, a member of the Jefferson Health System, provides lifetime rehabilitation and wellness programs for persons with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputation, orthopedic injury, joint replacement, geriatric illnesses and work injury.
