Wheelchair basketball is an exciting sport of skill and teamwork, whether you're an athlete with an amputee, a spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, or another upper extremity disability; basketball is a great way to get exercise, have fun, and be challenged. The rules of wheelchair basketball are slightly modified to make the game more accessible from a seated position.  To play the sport athletes must be able to push a manual wheelchair independently.

For more information about wheelchair basketball visit www.nwba.org.

Practices are held every Wednesday evening from 6:30 pm-9 pm (Sept.-May) at Carousel House (corner of Belmont Ave. and Avenue of the Republic, Phila., PA 19131).

Sullivan Classic 2013- 2014

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital and the Magee Spokesmen Wheelchair Basketball Team hosted the annual Dan Sullivan Classic Wheelchair Basketball Tournament, Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15, 2013 at the RiverWinds Community Center in West Deptford, NJ.

Competing at the tournament were five teams from the east coast including the Magee Spokesmen, the Charlottesville Cardinals, the Delaware Destroyers, and the Brooklyn Nets. Over the two day period, ten total games were played between each of the teams to determine who would come out on top of the round robin style tournament.

The Sullivan Classic kicked off at 10 o'clock Saturday morning with an evenly matched home team showdown between the Magee Spokesmen's A and B teams. The Magee Spokesmen B team went on to find themselves with the first win of the tournament after a second half push for the victory.  Magee Spokesmen B and Charlottesville Cardinals would all go on to secure double digit victories over their opponents for the remaining games of Saturday.  The Brooklyn Nets would be the only other team to secure a victory, beating the Delaware Destroyers, on Saturday. Charlottesville Cardinals and Magee Spokesmen B had the best position to finish strong going into Sunday with two wins and no losses.

The deciding game of the weekend came at 9 o'clock Sunday morning when the undefeated Charlottesville Cardinals and Magee Spokesmen B team faced each other. The victor of this match would most likely go on to secure first place in the tournament. Charlottesville Cardinals struggled at first to get hot from the floor which kept it a close game for the first half. However, like all their other opponents, the Charlottesville Cardinals were able to establish their transition game and find well balanced high percentage shots from the court.  This would prove to be too much for the Magee Spokesmen B team and even more so for the tired Delaware Destroyers later on that day. The trip up to New Jersey was well worth the while for the Charlottesville Cardinals. Who left the Dan Sullivan Classic, Sunday, after dominating their entire weekend schedule, with the first place trophy.

1. Charlottesville Cardinals
2. Magee Spokesmen B
3. Magee Spokesmen A
4. Brooklyn Nets
5. Delaware Destroyers

We would like to extend a special thanks to Coloplast, ABC Medical, Wilmington Medical Supply, Bux-Mont Awards, and all the volunteers who donated their time at the event and made all this possible.
