A sport unlike any other; Magee Eagles Quad Rugby is as competitive as it is intense! Players collide, literally, as the teams of four scramble to push a volleyball down a basketball court through their opponents zone and across the goal line. Competition is limited to athletes with impairments to both lower and upper limbs and each person is given a point value based on their level of functioning. Teams may only field a certain point total at any given time during the game's four periods. Play is fast-paced and rough as the players skillfully navigate modified wheelchairs around the court and into one another. Practices are held Tuesday evenings from 6:30 pm-9 pm (Sept.-May) at Carousel House (corner of Belmont Ave.& Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia PA 19131).

Beast of the East 2013
Magee Rehabilitation Hospital and the Magee Eagles hosted the 24th Annual Beast of the East Quad Rugby Tournament at the Riverwinds Community Center in West Deptford, NJ, on Saturday, November 9 and Sunday, November 10.  Five teams from the northeast region made the trip to Jersey to compete in the USQRA DII Tournament.

Saturday consisted of group stage play, with teams battling it out for the top seed in their respective groups for a chance to compete for first place come Sunday during the tournament stage.  The New York Warriors, Northeast Passage Wildcats, Magee Eagles A team and a combined team of Washington D.C. and Pittsburg players made up Group A and took to the court first on Saturday. The Group B teams consisting of the Capitol Punishers, Pittsburgh Steelwheelers, Connecticut Jammers and Magee Eagles B team played after.  Each team played all the opponents in their group once on Saturday.  Twelve matches later, filled with plenty of goal scoring runs, big crashes and falls, the Capitol Punishers and New York Warriors found themselves atop their groups.

Preparations for the second day of the tournament began early in the morning at Riverwinds Community Center.  Exhaustion from the first day stopped no one as the excitement continued Sunday.  The Warriors and the Punishers' great play from the previous day and undefeated record put them in great position to make it to the championship match. The Warriors had no difficulty picking up where they left off the day before, posting a convincing 47 - 32 win over the Steelwheelers to make it to the Championship match.  As for the Punishers, they were only able to edge by the Eagles A team in a 44 - 40 victory to send them to the final match as well.  Having just barely made it to the Championship match, the Capitol Punishers seemed like they would need to play flawlessly to be able to compete with New York, but it was New York who ended up having their hands full. In the New York Warrior's closest game of the weekend, they were able to sneak away with a 45 - 42 victory over the Capitol Punishers for first place in the 24th Annual Beast of the East Quad Rugby Tournament.

Awards for the tournament were given at the end of Sunday. The New York Warrior's Jarrett Dreyer took home a well-deserved MVP award for the weekend.  All-tournament team low pointer award went to Lee Fredette of New York, mid pointer was given to Andy Yelice of Washington D.C. and high pointer was awarded  to Ben Baker of the hometown Magee Eagles. The Sportsmanship award for the weekend was received Nate Loomis of the Northeast Passage Wildcats.

A special thanks to Coloplast, ABC Medical, Wilmington Medical Supply, Bux-Mont Awards, and all the volunteers who donated their time at the event.
