Philadelphia Phillies Manager, Charlie Manuel, has been named Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphias 2011 Humanitarian of the Year, and will officially be recognized by the award-winning physical and cognitive rehab hospital at its 24th Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner November 15 at 5:30 pm at the Four Seasons Hotel on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

The announcement was made last Tuesday afternoon on the field at Citizens Bank Park during the Phillies' batting practice when representatives from Magee, including President&CEO Jack A. Carroll, met with Manuel and presented him with a TEAM MAGEE cap.
 
"It really feels great that you'd honor me like this," said Manuel during the on-field meeting. "It feels great."

MageeҒs Humanitarian Award recognizes those who contribute positively to the role of healthcare and/or the lives of individuals with disabilities in the Philadelphia Region. Numerous individuals are reviewed each year by a selection committee. Manuels charitable endeavors include combating homelessness by supporting the Bethesda Project and Covenant House, taking the lead on various PhilliesҒ projects regarding ALS, visiting wounded veterans at the Coatesville, PA Veterans Hospital and taking the time on several occasions to talk baseball with patients at Magee, most recently during this past holiday season.

This is the second time in the twenty-four year history of MageeҒs Humanitarian Award that the honor has been bestowed on a Phillie. Tim McCarver, former Philadelphia Phillies catcher and legendary broadcaster, was the first person ever to receive the award back in 1988.

"I can't think of a more appropriate human being than Charlie Manuel to receive a humanitarian award," said McCarver when asked to comment on Manuel receiving the honor they both now share. "He (Manuel) is one of the finest human beings I ever met."

And McCarver thinks Magee is an organization worthy of deciding a humanitarian.

ԓIve been associated with Magee a long, long time,Ҕ said McCarver who was once on Magees board. ғThey do tremendous work on every level. Philadelphia is fortunate to have a rehabilitation hospital like Magee.

Proceeds from the Humanitarian Award Dinnerԗwhich Magee is hoping will hit or exceed $175,000will be used to create the Charlie Manuel Healing Garden on Magees rooftop, which already hosts a greenhouse for horticultural therapy, a patient resource center, and a city street-scape where patients practice mobility.

Statistics show that healing gardens can help shorten the length of hospital stays, reduce the amount of pain medications needed and improve the mental well-being of patients and their families.
