Magee Rehabilitation Hospital to Host Quad-Rugby Atlantic North Regional Championships

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital's Quad Rugby Team, the Magee Eagles, will host the United States Quad Rugby Association's (USQRA) Atlantic North Regional Championships March 1-2 at the Carousel House in Fairmount Park.

Made famous by the documentary, Murder Ball, Wheelchair/Quad Rugby is played by individuals who are quadriplegic on a basketball court with a volley ball. The rules and strategies are similar to both hockey and basketball, making for a fast-paced, competitive game.

The USQRA divides the country into four sections, and each section is divided into two regions. The top four teams in each region advance to the sectional championship with an opportunity to advance to the national championship in Louisville.

"We're excited to host the tournament this year," said Magee Eagle player, Thomas Hamill. "Teams from New York, Washington, DC, North Carolina, and Virginia will all be playing for a chance to advance to the National Championship."

The schedule for the tournament is as follows:

Saturday 9:00am Raleigh (NC) vs United Spinal (NY)

10:30am Magee (PA) vs ECC (VA)

12:00 pm Raleigh (NC) vs Capitol (DC)

The Carousel House is located at the intersection of Belmont Ave. and North Concourse Drive in Philadelphia.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital is the Philadelphia region's first rehab hospital. Along with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Magee is one of 14 federally designated model Regional Spinal Cord Injury Centers. Magee is also home to the nation's first brain injury rehab program to be accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Celebrating its 50th year in operation in 2008, the hospital is authorized to treat wounded military personnel returning from war.
