Night of Champions

On Friday, May 9, Howard Eskin received Magee Rehabilitation Hospital's Champion in the Community Award at the 8th Annual Magee Night of Champions.

But Eskin didn't just accept the award for his past involvement with the hospital - which includes donating the $13,000 raised by the sale of the Howard Eskin Bobblehead Doll in 2006 - he volunteered as the guest auctioneer.

While local celebrities in attendance such as Vince Papale, Adam Taliaferro, Billy Cunningham, Mike Mamula, Mike Chalenski, Ed Stefanski, Ted Pendergrass, Phil Martelli, Fran Dunphy, and Jackie Frazier-Lyde looked on, Eskin cajoled and prodded bids from the event attendees. A Philadelphia Eagles helmet, signed by over 30 players and coaches, raised $2,200 alone.

The fundraiser - which consists of dinner, raffle, prizes, and silent and live auctions of autographed sports memorabilia, vacations, gift certificates, and a variety of interesting items brought in $172,000 for the hospital's Community Program Fund, which supports wheelchair sports team, peer mentoring, theater arts, and other patient programs.

The Night of Champions is held each year at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall on Columbus Boulevard.

The 9th Annual Night of Champions will be held Friday, May 8th, 2009.
