Magee Rehabilitation Hospital—a physical and cognitive rehabilitation hospital in Philadelphia—has received an Achievement Award from the Hospital&Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) for its innovative approach to Patient Care.

To improve patient care and satisfaction, Magee has created a “Culture of Excellence” by instituting programs that teach Leadership Development and proper Service Recovery. Magee also implemented a Rewards & Recognition program to recognize those who excel in providing patient services.

The crown jewel of the “Culture of Excellence” programs is Magee’s REACH (Respect, Excellence, Attitude, Compassion, and Hospitality) course, an all-day, multi-media session which combines learning about proper patient care and patient satisfaction with fun, interactive activities that bring Magee staff from all levels together to figure out the best way to tend to patient needs and expectations.

And the efforts have succeeded.

Magee’s rank in the Press Ganey database (which measures patient satisfaction in healthcare organizations through surveys) increased from the 72nd percentile to the 87th percentile overall for patient satisfaction. As of December 31, 2009, Magee was ranked in the 92nd percentile. Employee turnover rates have also improved. Prior to this program, nursing and hospitality turnover rates were 13% and 22% respectively. Rates are currently at 5.5% and 13 % respectively.

HAP’s mission is to advance the health of individuals and communities and to advocate for and provide services to members who are accountable to the patients and communities they serve. Magee has been chosen as the recipient for the award in the category of Patient Care. To learn more about HAP, visit HAPonline.org.
