David's Story

After paralysis from Guilan-Barre Syndrome, David Phillips found strength in Art Therapy.

David came to Magee after he experienced paralysis caused by Guillain-Barre Syndrome. As an inpatient, he participated in individual and group art therapy, and even continued his art on his own after full days of physical and occupational therapy.

“When I arrived, I couldn’t hold a spoon to feed myself,” David says. “Drawing helped me improve my motor control and really brought something back.”

While David never considered himself an artistic person, he has found a new passion that he carried with him after Magee.

“It made me open my eyes,” he says. “I’m not going to be Picasso, but I can draw with my son.”
